Chatham Cougars' Sports Highlights for Week Ending 09/15/02

Chatham tops in the "Battle of the Cougars"

Chatham burst out of the gate on Saturday, scoring five straight goals in a 5-2 victory over Columbia on Saturday in Maplewood. The win over the Group IV Cougars from Essex County made it bavck-to-back victories to start the 2002 girls' soccer campaign.
Caitlyn Kuntz ignited the scoring outburst three minutes into the game when she tallied a goal off a free kick. Sophomore Julie Berger added a pair of goals with Katelyn Killea and Jamie Sadono scoring solo goals. Megan Diorio was credited with a pair of assists while Allison Frank and Allison Solomita dished off assists.
Keeper Allison Michalski was credited with stopping five shots on goal.
On Friday afternoon, the Cougars blanked Whippany Park 4-0 in a Colonial Hills Conference confrontation played on the Wildcats' turf. Berger turned in a hat trick effort in the season-opener, all of which came in the second half. Kuntz, a midfielder, scored the first goal of the year when she tickled the Wildcats' cage four and half minutes into the game.
Chatham rolled to a 2-0 victory over Morristown-Beard to open the girls' volleyball schedule. Sophomore Ashley Read delivered seven service points and put away five kills as the Cougars won by scores of 15-4, 15-7.
Mountain Lakes blanked Chatham 2-0 despite a dozen saves by goalie Dana Cronin in the opener of the field hockey season on Friday. The next day the Cougars lost to Boonton by an identical 2-0 score with Cronin coming up with eight saves.
Chatham opened the girls' tennis schedule by slipping past Madison by a score of 3-2 on Thursday. The Cougars swept the doubles competition with the top tandem of Katie Butler and Alley Harvey coming back to defeat Michelle Perotta and Lee Wynn by a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. The second duo of Corrine Akcirn and Malory Kroll outlasted Grace Kim and Lydia Sung in three sets by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Liz Rommer provided the key third team point when she came on strong to defeat Carolina Gou-Leonhardt by a score of 7-5, 6-2.
